Georgiana Cojocaru

Real (?) love story

There are various reasons why people get married. During this residency, Georgiana aimed to understand the reasons behind early marriages in the Hundorf community and how partners manage to accept each other, while at the same time highlighting the risk that marriage could become an internal competition filled with resentment. The "real(?)love story" project is a dialogue between Georgiana and both partners in a couple, reflected in a video featuring the women's testimonies and an installation that conveys the men's perspectives.

The objects assembled from metal sheets represent symbols associated with the majority of the houses in the village. These metal pieces are placed either on the gates or the roofs of the houses and bear only the initials of the man in the family, along with the year the house was built. The first two plates display expressions used by the women Georgiana spoke with, while the third depicts how they currently perceive this tradition.

Georgiana discovered that the custom of inscribing initials is rare nowadays. In discussions with couples in the village, when asked if they would like their initials displayed on their house, the conclusion was that each couple desires to be "AT THEIR HOME" (living together) and "WITH THEIR HOME" (built together, with a common effort).

The 80 mosaic pieces include the emblem that typically accompanies the initials or the construction year — a cross. This symbol is often found on the villagers' houses. The 80 mosaic pieces are inscribed with photographs of the three women Georgiana spoke with during the residency, as well as text fragments reflecting the opinions of the men in the couples.
